Principles of Pediatric Dosing

Pediatric dosing is primarily weight-based (mg/kg/dose or mg/kg/day). Never exceed the maximum adult dose. Always check age-related contraindications.

Prescription Safety

Always verify: known allergies, drug interactions, maximum dose, age-appropriate route (syrup for infants, tablets for older children), and spacing between doses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to calculate medication dose for a child?

Multiply the per-kg dose (mg/kg) by the child's weight. E.g.: Amoxicillin 25 mg/kg × 15 kg = 375 mg per dose.

Yes, from 3 months and over 5 kg, except with chickenpox, dehydration, or kidney issues. Use 10 mg/kg/dose.

How much paracetamol for a child?

15 mg/kg per dose, max 4 times daily, minimum 6 hours apart. Do not exceed 60 mg/kg/day.

When to see a doctor?

If symptoms persist after 48-72h, fever doesn't drop, or allergic reaction occurs (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty).
